The full carbon fibre bonnet didn’t go unnoticed on the R.S. Performance TC2 demo car, and not only because of its aggressively sporty style – it also features on the new Clio R.S., reducing its overall weight by almost 6kg.

Full carbon fibre is exceptionally lightweight yet hard wearing, which is why it is so frequently used on race cars and supercars, and even in high-tech sectors such as aeronautics.

“What we offer our customers is a real track racing showpiece, designed for demanding and passionate drivers,” explains Guillaume Calvar, R.S. Performance project manager for Renault Sport Cars. “We rely on methods and technology that we master, because we use them in competition, especially in Formula 1.”

The R.S. Performance full carbon fibre bonnet is built using what is known as the ‘prepeg’ process, in which the carbon sheets are soaked with just the right amount of resin. The operator then ‘drapes’ the carbon fold – in other words he applies it to the mould – before curing it under vacuum in an autoclave. Unlike the so-called “wet” or manual process, in which the resin is applied with a brush, the prepreg process applies only the right amount of resin to the carbon. This allows for a heavier, stronger final product.

The result is all-round, high-end quality in terms of:
● Design: a perfectly regular, shiny and smooth finish
● Resistance: the bonnet benefits from the same high resistance as the carbon fibre
● Weight reduction: a total mass that is halved (6.8kg vs 12.6kg) compared to a steel bonnet
